The “Father of our Country” was God’s chosen man
to lead America both during the War and in the period afterwards.
During the French Indian Wars, while serving in
the British Army, an Indian Chief named Seneca directed fifteen of his best
marksmen to do nothing but fire at Washington. After ten minutes he told
them to stop. “A great Spirit guards that man. He will become the Chief of
a yet unborn nation.”
Unanimously elected President to two terms, he
declined to serve a third term. He had hoped that Patrick Henry would
accept the nomination to succeed him.
Washington was married to Martha Custis, a widow
with two small children. It was a very satisfying marriage.
Washington was a strong Christian and in his
Farewell Address he advised against foreign entanglements of any kind.
“It is our true policy to steer clear of
permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.’
“Let us with caution indulge
that morality can be obtained without religion. Reason and
experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail with
the exclusion of religious principles.”
“The time is near at hand which must determine
whether Americans are to be free men or slaves.”
Blessed is the nation whose God is the
Lord, Ps 33:12
